Mr. Andras Horvai, World Bank Country Director and Resident Representative for the Russian Federation, Europe and Central Asia, offered an open lecture to the Financial University students on 4 April 2019. The lecture theme was From Poverty to Prosperity: Global Development Goals.

The organization provides financial and technical assistance to developing countries around the world. The World Bank's mission is to end extreme poverty by reducing the share of the global population that lives in extreme poverty to 3 percent by 2030 and to promote shared prosperity by increasing the incomes of the poorest 40 percent of people in every country. The World Bank Group focuses on offering policy advice, rendering technical assistance to governments of developing countries, political risk insurance and rendering dispute resolution services.

Andras Horvai is World Bank Country Director and Resident Representative for the Russian Federation, Europe and Central Asia. He graduated from the University of Economics, Budapest.  Shortly after graduation, he started building his career, and the career was fast-paced. He occupied the position of General Manager at the National Bank of Hungary. It was his first managerial position. He also served as Alternate Executive Director of EBRD. Since joining the World Bank in 1993, Mr. Horvai has worked extensively on Europe and Central Asia, including the countries of Southeast Europe, Turkey and Poland, as well as South Asia.  Later on, he managed the World Bank Group's Office in Vienna and the portfolio of World Bank-financed projects in the countries of Southeast Europe. Since 2015, he has been Country Director and Resident Representative for the Russian Federation, Europe and Central Asia.

What triggers poverty in developing countries? What are the dangers of the globalization process? How can we ensure the third world countries' growth? Those were the issues addressed by the Financial University guest. According to Mr. Horvai, the World Bank Group does not consist of bankers only. It incorporates experts in the field of energy production, education, and social policy. The Group supports GDP growth, contributes to the middle income countries' and poor solvent countries' development, creates the right environment for private investment in the poorest countries. The speaker has noted that the global situation is such that 2 billion people live in political conflict, cruelty and social inequality-prone countries, 736 million people live below the poverty line, half of the world's population do not have access to good medical assistance, 15 thousand children under 5 die daily, 781 million people do not have access to education institutions, about a billion people in the world do not have official identity cards. This is why the World Bank Groups' efforts are so important. After all, the organization focuses on addressing these and other humanitarian issues related to poverty, corruption, unstable economy, etc.
